Kennedy Townsend Responds to Palin on Issues of Faith and State

Posted in News/Opinion by Lithobolos | Tags: , ,

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend’s recent op ed in response to Sarah Palin’s criticism of President Kennedy in her new book, “America by Heart,”  reminds us of important issues that still affect our country today. It is important to remember that there is no religious test to be a public official and there shouldn’t even be an informal one to get elected. People should be judged by their public acts and the public record, not on their private religious faith. Yet today we still have people calling President Obama a  Muslim (which wouldn’t be a bad or good thing) and saying that Mitt Romney can’t win because he’s Mormon (though he seems to feel that as long as he is considered Christian he passes the test). Add this to all the talk from the religious right and the infusion of religion in their policy, and you have a disaster, not in the making, but in process. It is horrible that we are talking about “the war on Christmas” and not the “war on poverty.”

Good quote:

Palin fails to understand the genius of our nation. The United States is one of the most vibrant religious countries on Earth precisely because of its religious freedom. When power and faith are entwined, faith loses. Power tends to obfuscate, corrupt and focus on temporal rather than eternal purposes.

Elizabeth Edwards Has Died

Posted in News/Opinion by Lithobolos | Tags: ,

Sad news as an inspiration to women and progressives everywhere has died of cancer. This happened just after news came out that Edwards was not seeking further treatment, under doctor recommendation, as the cancer had spread to her liver.

Since first being diagnosed in 2004 with breast cancer amidst her husband’s vice presidential campaign, Edwards had an up and down battle with both her illness and in her private and public life. She showed unparalleled strength trough it all, and for that she will be fondly remembered.
