Netflix Streams on PS3 Next Month!

Whoo hoo! The PS3′s getting Netflix!

In the past, I was kind of envious of the 360 (not having one of my own) for allowing users to insta-watch Netflix movies, but now it looks like come November the PS3 will be fitted with a similar launch application off of the XMB.  This comes a year after the partnership between Microsoft and Netflix made the feature available on the 360.

One slight oddity is that, at least initially, you’ll be required to have a specially formatted Netflix “boot” disc of sorts while streaming media (you’ll need to request the disc from Netflix). Now, I don’t really mind, though it would be a bit of a hassle, and I understand they probably felt like they had to get the product out quicker. Of course, they are working on the release of an embedded system to negate the need of a disc. But hey, PSN is free, and all you’ll need to watch Netflix on your tube through your PS3 is your already existing Netflix subscription ($8.99/month minimum) so I can’t complain!

Now, there have been other options out there, and I did find and test out a spiffy unofficial/third-party app called PlayOn. PlayOn acts as a media server allowing you to stream Netflix, Hulu, CBS, Youtube, CNN, ESPN, and Amazon VOD (beta) through your PS3, 360, and even Wii (beta). The only catch is it’s not free, costing a one-time $39.99. For me, since I’d mainly just use Netflix and Hulu, I’m not sure if it will be worth a purchase with Netflix being official soon. Nonetheless, it’s a polished piece of software that is worth a look. Right now I’m on the free 14 day trial, and streaming has been smooth and it was quick and easy to use.
